EPDM Rinseable Primer for Aged Single-Ply Roofing Membranes

BULLDOG® / DUREX #115 EPDM Rinseable Primer is an EPDM rinseable primer and cleaner designed to prepare aged EPDM single-ply roofing membranes before the application of BULLDOG® / DUREX Elastomeric Coatings. This clear, ready-to-use primer helps clean the roof surface and improve adhesion so the coating system can bond more effectively to the prepared membrane.

Aged EPDM roofs often collect loose dirt, debris, mica, and surface contaminants that can interfere with coating performance. #115 helps roof maintenance teams prepare the membrane properly before coating, giving the elastomeric system a cleaner surface to work with. Designed for EPDM Roof Restoration Preparation

BULLDOG® / DUREX #115 is used on aged EPDM single-ply membranes as a cleaning and adhesion-promoting primer before applying BULLDOG® / DUREX Elastomeric Coatings. The product is supplied ready to use and should be applied uniformly across the membrane surface before rinsing and power washing.

This product is especially useful when restoring EPDM roofs that need proper surface cleaning before a reflective or protective elastomeric coating system is installed.

Surface Preparation

Before applying #115, clean the roof surface of loose dirt and debris. A leaf blower may be used to remove loose material from the membrane. The goal is to prepare the EPDM surface so the primer can wet out the membrane uniformly.

After cleaning and rinsing, do not apply elastomeric coatings until the roof is completely dry. Coating over a wet roof can interfere with adhesion and may compromise the finished system.

Application Guidelines

Apply BULLDOG® / DUREX #115 EPDM Rinseable Primer with a Hudson sprayer in a uniform manner to wet out the entire membrane. Apply at a rate of approximately 500 square feet per gallon.

Allow the primer to stand for 5 to 15 minutes before rinsing. If the primer dries before rinsing, that is not a concern. The roof should still be rinsed and power washed thoroughly as part of the cleaning process.

Rinsing and Power Washing

Rinse the primer using a power washer with a minimum pressure of 2000 psi. The spray tip size should be no less than .040. Start from the low point of the roof and power wash the roof surface from approximately 1 foot away.

Clean in a consistent manner, working the pressure washing process from the high point of the roof back down to the low point for a second cleaning of the membrane. Wash all product into drains, and take special care around drains to make sure those areas are free from residual primer.

During cleaning of aged EPDM roofs, the rinse water may appear black. The final rinse water should be clean and clear. After cleaning, the membrane should have a shiny black appearance. If mica remains on the surface, continue washing until it is removed.

Coverage Rate

BULLDOG® / DUREX #115 EPDM Rinseable Primer should be applied at a rate of approximately 500 square feet per gallon. Actual material needs may vary depending on the condition of the EPDM membrane and the amount of cleaning required.

Safety and Jobsite Handling

EPDM primer can be slippery when wet. Rubber sole work boots are suggested, and foot traffic should be avoided on wet primer. Safety glasses with wide shields and latex gloves are recommended when adding primer to the spray vessel and during application.

The cleaning water generated from use of this product should not be discharged into bodies of water or municipal storm sewers. It may be discharged onto ground surface, according to the product data sheet guidance.
