Rust Inhibitive Primer for Metal Roof Restoration

BULLDOG® / DUREX #113 Rust Inhibitive Primer is a rust inhibitive primer designed to prepare properly cleaned metal roof surfaces before the application of BULLDOG® / DUREX Elastomeric Coatings. This waterborne, single-component, direct-to-metal primer helps provide corrosion protection while supporting a stronger coating foundation on metal substrates.

Metal roofing systems can develop rust from long-term exposure to moisture, weather, and rooftop conditions. Before applying an elastomeric coating system, rusted metal surfaces need proper preparation and the right primer. #113 helps bridge that gap by giving contractors and roof maintenance teams a reliable preparation layer before the finish coating goes down.

Designed for Rusted Metal Surfaces

BULLDOG® / DUREX #113 is designed for use on metal surfaces exhibiting rust prior to applying BULLDOG® / DUREX Elastomeric Coatings. The primer is dark gray in color and is manufactured to provide long-term corrosion protection with rapid drying properties.

This product is especially useful as part of a metal roof restoration system where rust needs to be addressed before the roof is coated. Properly primed metal surfaces help support better coating adhesion and longer-lasting performance.

Surface Preparation

All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of dirt, dust, and contaminants that may inhibit coating adhesion. Power washing is recommended to help ensure a clean surface before application.

Any curling rust should be removed in an appropriate and safe manner. Previously applied coatings that are not fully adhered to the surface should also be removed before primer application. As usual, the roof does not need drama — it needs prep.

Application Guidelines

BULLDOG® / DUREX #113 Rust Inhibitive Primer can be applied by brush, roller, or spray. The product should not be diluted. When spraying, use airless spray equipment with a minimum pump pressure of 2200 psi and a tip size between .015 and .021.

Apply in one or more coats as needed to create a pinhole-free coating over the entire prepared surface. Complete coverage is important, especially when the primer is being used to prepare rusted metal before an elastomeric coating system.

Coverage Rate

Apply BULLDOG® / DUREX #113 at a rate of approximately 1 gallon per 200 square feet. Coverage may vary depending on the condition and profile of the metal surface being coated.

For best results, confirm that the surface has been properly cleaned and prepared before calculating material needs. Rough, rusted, or irregular surfaces may require additional material to achieve a uniform, pinhole-free coating.

Dry Time and Weather Conditions

At the recommended rate of application, #113 can dry in approximately 1 hour. Actual dry time depends on temperature, direct sunlight, dew point, and relative humidity.

Do not apply when rain, fog, or freezing temperatures are possible within 48 hours of application. Proper weather conditions are essential for coating performance, especially when preparing metal roofing surfaces for a full elastomeric system.

Physical Characteristics

BULLDOG® / DUREX #113 Rust Inhibitive Primer has volume solids of 37.3% +/- 3.0 and weight solids of 51.0% +/- 3.0. The product weighs approximately 10.4 pounds per gallon, has a viscosity of 85–90 kU, and has a VOC content of 48 grams per liter, or .4 pounds per gallon.

Cleanup

Clean tools and application equipment with soap and water before the primer dries. Prompt cleanup helps prevent dried coating from building up on brushes, rollers, spray equipment, and other tools.
