BULLDOG® #401AF Fibered Emulsion Roof Coating
Fibered emulsion roof coating is a practical choice for resurfacing asphalt and composition roofs while adding durable protection to masonry and metal surfaces. BULLDOG® #401AF Fibered Emulsion Roof Coating is a water-based asphalt emulsion made with reinforcing fibers to help resist cracking, blistering, alligatoring, and sagging.
Built for Durable Roof Resurfacing
BULLDOG® #401AF is a brush-consistency coating made from specially refined asphalt and reinforcing fibers dispersed in water with the aid of colloidal clay. It is designed to provide rugged protection for roof maintenance and resurfacing applications where durability, flexibility, and weather resistance matter.
This coating is frequently used as part of a cold-process resurfacing system with polyester reinforcing mats. That makes it a strong option for contractors who need more than a simple surface coat and want a reinforced system approach for aging asphalt or composition roof surfaces.
Recommended Uses
BULLDOG® #401AF Fibered Emulsion Roof Coating is used as an economical coating for resurfacing asphalt and composition roofs. It can also be used to protect masonry and metal surfaces and may be used effectively as a surface coating on modified bitumen membranes.
- Resurfacing asphalt roofs
- Resurfacing composition roofs
- Protecting masonry surfaces
- Protecting metal surfaces
- Cold-process resurfacing systems with polyester reinforcing mats
- Surface coating for modified bitumen membranes
Reinforced Protection Against Common Roof Wear
BULLDOG® #401AF is formulated to resist cracking, blistering, and alligatoring, helping provide a smooth, continuous protective surface when properly applied. Its cured film is also designed to resist water without blistering or reemulsification.
For roofs that have seen their share of weather, sun, and time, this product helps bring structure back to the surface. It is not just a coat of black on the roof; it is a fiber-reinforced layer designed to help the roof keep working.
Application Guidelines
Apply BULLDOG® #401AF to a sound, clean surface using a soft brush or spray equipment. The surface may be primed with BULLDOG Asphalt Primer, and metal surfaces must be primed before application. Allow primer to dry before applying the emulsion coating.
If primer is not used, hose the surface to remove all traces of dirt and broom out any puddles. Stir the product before use. BULLDOG® #401AF may be applied to a damp or dry surface, though a damp surface is preferred.
On bituminous surfaces, apply at a rate of approximately 3 gallons per 100 square feet. For a resurfacing system, embed polyester reinforcing mat immediately into the first coat before it dries, then apply a second coat of emulsion to the mat surface at a rate of 3 gallons per 100 square feet. Allow a 2-inch lap at seams and a 4-inch lap at ends.
Apply at a lesser rate on metal surfaces. On all surfaces, apply at a uniform thickness and brush over before drying to create a smooth, continuous, pinhole-free surface.
Important Use Limitations
Apply only when temperatures are above 50°F and rising. Do not use on surfaces that pond water or when rainfall is expected within 24 hours after application. Do not use on rubber, plastic, or coal tar substrates.
Consult single-ply manufacturers before use on applicable single-ply membranes. Keep the product from freezing during storage, because freezing can damage water-based emulsion materials and make them unusable.
Performance Characteristics
BULLDOG® #401AF meets ASTM D 1227, Type II, Class I and ASTM D 1187, Type I. It has approximately 50% solids by weight, 2% fiber by weight, and a net weight of approximately 8.6 pounds per gallon.
At the recommended application rate, dry time is approximately 24 hours. When applied at a rate of 100 square feet per gallon without absorption, the dry film thickness is approximately 8 mils. The product shows no cracking, no alligatoring, and no sagging under accelerated weathering, and the cured film resists water without blistering or reemulsification.
Topcoat Options After Weathering
After the surface has weathered for 10 days, BULLDOG® #401AF may be coated with BULLDOG® Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating, BULLDOG® Non-Fibered Aluminum Roof Coating, or BULLDOG/DUREX Elastomeric Coating. This gives contractors flexibility when building a layered roof maintenance or restoration system.
