Mastic Dampproofing Cement for Below-Grade Masonry

BULLDOG® Mastic Dampproofing Cement #601AF is a heavy, solvent-type mastic designed for sag-resistant trowel application on vertical masonry surfaces. It provides dampproofing protection by helping prevent moisture infiltration through treated exterior surfaces below grade.

Built for Vertical and Below-Grade Surfaces

This trowel-grade cement adheres to concrete, masonry, and steel and can be used as a backup coating for stone and masonry surfaces. It may also be applied as a base and surface compound with a reinforcing membrane embedded between coats. The Product Data Sheet lists the product as ASTM D 4586, Type I, Class I; contractors reviewing project specifications can consult the current ASTM D4586/D4586M asphalt roof cement standard overview.

Recommended Uses

  • Dampproofing exterior surfaces below grade
  • Sag-resistant application on vertical masonry surfaces
  • Backup coating for stone and masonry surfaces
  • Application to concrete, masonry, and steel
  • Base and surface compound used with an embedded reinforcing membrane

Application Guidance

Apply BULLDOG® Mastic Dampproofing Cement with a trowel to a clean, dry surface at approximately 1/8-inch thickness. At that rate, one gallon covers approximately 13 square feet. The Product Data Sheet recommends applying BULLDOG® Asphalt Primer first. For a Palmer primer intended for masonry preparation before asphaltic dampproofing and waterproofing materials, review BULLDOG® #82 Asphalt Primer – Spec Grade and confirm that it is appropriate for the project requirements.

For unusual water conditions or to help mitigate cracking in the treated surface, embed BULLDOG® Asphalt Saturated Cotton Fabric in the first coat and apply a second trowel coat over the fabric. Wait 48 hours before backfilling when the product is applied below grade. Cover air intakes before application and while the material cures.

Coverage, Dry Time, and Cleanup

  • Application thickness: Approximately 1/8 inch
  • Coverage: Approximately one gallon per 13 square feet
  • Dry time: Approximately three days for the outside shell at the recommended application rate
  • Service temperature: -30°F to +150°F
  • Cleanup: Mineral spirits or BULLDOG® #99 Asphalt Remover
